Citizen Science Hub Amsterdam officially launched to strengthen public participation in research

Citizen Science | 2026-06-22

In June 2026, the Citizen Science Hub Amsterdam was officially launched at the new library of the University of Amsterdam. The initiative brings together the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam University Medical Center, the Amsterdam Public Library, and the Municipality of Amsterdam. The aim of the Hub is to strengthen the citizen science ecosystem in the city, foster closer collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and citizens, and create new opportunities for the public to actively participate in the research process.

Over the next four years, the Hub will focus on training, integrating citizen science into higher education institutions, addressing ethical governance issues, and engaging local communities. The initiative is built around three key areas: sustainable and inclusive cities, health and well-being, and democratic and accessible technologies. The project partners expect that integrating citizen science approaches into education, research, and urban development processes will help build a sustainable knowledge network, strengthen social inclusion, and increase the impact of science on society.

This initiative is considered one of the most notable recent examples of citizen science development in Europe and may serve as an inspiring model for universities and research institutions seeking to advance open science and public engagement in research. More information about the Citizen Science Hub Amsterdam is available on the University of Amsterdam website.
