On April 10, Kaunas University of Technology Library staff visited the libraries of the Gdansk University of Technology and the University of Gdansk. The purpose of the visits was to familiarize themselves with the activities of these academic libraries, the organization of their services, and modern solutions designed for the academic and research communities.
Significant attention during the visits was devoted to scientific communication in the field of open science. Library representatives shared their experiences on how libraries contribute to the promotion of open access, the management of research data, the provision of consultations for researchers, and the support of openness in research outputs.
The Director of the Gdansk University of Technology Library, Anna Dąbrowska, presented the library as the largest and most modern technology and science library in northern Poland. The Head of the Scholarly Communication and Open Science Department, Magdalena Szuflita-Żurawska, introduced the university’s institutional repository “Knowledge Bridge,” discussing its purpose and information retrieval capabilities. She also presented the main library spaces, the automated lending system, reading rooms, individual study areas, and methods of information digitization, as well as the Rare Publications and the History and Museum Collections departments.
The Director of the University of Gdansk Library, Professor Arnold Kłonczyński, presented the library’s activities. Library staff members Agnieszka Kranich-Lamczyk and Zbigniew Ruszczyk introduced the key performance indicators of the university and the library, as well as open science initiatives. Educational games designed to promote data security and the dissemination of open science were also presented. During the tour, the library’s architectural solutions, digitization processes, and collections of rare publications and art objects were introduced.
The experience gained and the exchange of best practices during these visits will be important for the further development of library services, strengthening scholarly communication, open access policy, and research data management competencies, with the aim of improving access to research outputs and the overall quality of library services.
